[ Perpetual Motion : Solo Exhibition ]

In the exhibition artist GyuChul Moon explores the motion and the sound, as well as their relationships and their expandability in a multi-layered sense, hold up their continuous-perpetual motility beyond the fragmentary movements. Where does the sound come from, where does the movement come from, and how is it determined? If sounds are the result of certain moves, what sounds can our motions be reduced to? Or vice versa, how do we react in response to this sounds? This exhibition observes small, trivial gestures, repeated movements, and examines how they are related to the environment around us, while at the same time questioning how these movements flow together and reach out against physical limits around the world.
Based on artist Gyuchul Moon’s premise that ‘living things produce sound, and things that produce sound exhibit movement’, the artworks and audience of this exhibition are essentially and unconsciously producing sounds, responses, and movements. The artworks in the exhibition allude to the longing for infinite energy sources that couldn’t exist in the physical world and the representation of conscious movement. Waves constantly generated, fragments of sound, digitally implemented visuals, people moving in one direction, and motors that run in a loop each have their own position and motility in various specific directions. As each fragmented movement organically connects, it presents the beginning of Perpetual Motion and raises the ontological question. Furthermore, the trajectories of the artwork-audience-light-sound movements overlap, spread, meet and disappear, repeatedly. They engage with each other while each element expands movement itself in its trajectory. The exhibition is being as the place from the empty space and the imagination of the possibility of perpetual motion, asking questions about humanity in this contemporary era.
전시에서 문규철 작가는 단편적인 움직임들의 확장가능성을 탐구하며 다층적 감각에서의 소리와 움직임의 운동성을 보여준다. 소리는 어디에서 오고, 움직임은 어디에 기인하고 있으며, 어떻게 결정되는가? 소리가 특정 운동의 결과라면, 우리의 움직임은 과연 어떤 소리들로 환원 될 수 있을까? 혹은 반대로 그 소리가 우리를 어떻게 반응하고 움직이게 하는가? 작고 사소한 움직임, 반복되는 몸짓들이 어떻게 우리 주변의 환경과 관계하는지 관찰하는 동시에 이러한 움직임이 물리적 한계에 맞서면서, 함께 운동하고 뻗어나갈 수 있는지 질문한다.
‘살아있는 것은 소리가 있고, 소리가 나는 것은 운동한다’ 라는 문규철 작가의 전제를 바탕으로 이 전시에서 작품과 관객은 기본적으로 소리나는 존재이자, 반응하고, 움직이는 존재로서 전시장 안에서 무의지-의지를 가지고 분주하게 움직이게 된다. 전시장 안의 작품들은 물리적 세계에서 존재할 수 없는 무한한 에너지원에 대한 갈망이자, 의지를 가진 움직임의 표상이다. 전시장 내에서 끊임없이 생성되는 파원, 소리의 파편들, 디지털로 구현된 비주얼, 한쪽 방향으로 움직이는 사람, 반복적으로 돌아가는 모터들은 각자 특정한 방향성을 가지고 움직이며, 개별적인 관점에서 작품들은 자신의 자리를 지키며 운동한다. 파편화된 각각의 운동들이 유기적으로 연결되면서 Perpectual motion의 단초를 제시하고, 그 존재론적 질문을 던지기도한다. 나아가 각각의 운동의 요소가 자신의 궤도안에서 스스로 확장하고, 다른 운동의 요소들과 관계하는 과정을 거치면서 작품-관객-빛-소리 운동의 궤도는 중첩되고, 확산되고, 만났다가, 사라지기를 반복한다. 전시장은 곧, 운동의 연계성 그리고 Perpetual motion의 가능성을 상상해보는 탐구이자 동시대 휴매니티의 근원에 대해 질문하는 소통의 장場이 된다.
